Report: A day in the country ....

Thursday, 19th of August 2010

We were picked up this morning by a church car … which is usually shared by various priests here in Saigon. Lan’s son Nathan was there as well, he was our translator. Nathan studies in the UK, his English is just brilliant. We had a good chat on the way to My Tho.
Then we finally met Father Huong.

His English was much better face-to-face. Matt explained what the CVSG was all about and that we support children, scholar-ships and medical hardship. We drank Artichoke tea and Father Hoang explained about his work and that the bishop wants to meet us. WOW!!! Never met a bishop face to face, not even if the first name was Julie!!!

After lunch at “Chinese dentist time” we met the bishop. He introduced us to the local priests who work for the Caritas (lat. for love and compassion). Caritas was reintroduced to Viet Nam after 32 years.

Matt repeated his introduction talk about the CVSG. We made it very clear that we want to have a connection with the children we support, not just hand out money. This was very well received. At the Caritas office we worked out what we want and that we will be back next Friday. They will prepare profiles and talk to the families. Very good.

We went to a church orphanage and school at My Tho.

Very interesting, another school for hearing impaired children. We saw some classes ... children were all very nice and happy.

Earlier during our lunch break Matt mentioned the calendar matter to Nathan. He understood and told us in no uncertain terms that the government has certain restrictions on calendars. On the Internet the government has no control, but printed matter is a different cattle of fish. So the project is dead in the water.

Driving back, we had some fun and discussed various topics. It was good to hear what young Vietnamese people think.

Sudden rain floated some of the local areas. Scooters are ok, motor bike riders get wet from above and below!!!

Something is wrong with this umbrella!!!

Back at the hotel at 6 pm. A great day, even so it rained most of it. After a nice dinner we will sleep like a log.
